Our Story
From Democracy’s College to the World:
A Historic Live Arts Stage in Miami
Created in 1990 as Cultura del Lobo by Arts impresario Olga Garay, Live Arts Miami is proud to be a part of Miami Dade College’s celebrated Department of Cultural Affairs, which gathers the school’s family of groundbreaking cultural initiatives under one roof, the historic and iconic MDC Freedom Tower, located in downtown Miami. Along with its sister organizations, Live Arts Miami has played a key, seminal role in the formation of Miami’s modern cultural environment.
Three Decades of Unforgettable Performances and Impactful Community Programs.
Over three decades of work in the community, we have been proud to feature some of the most extraordinary performing artists of our time and countless unforgettable performances, collaborations, and public art projects from all over the world. Our educational initiatives and workshops, and artist-led talks and conversations with activists, have empowered thousands of local creators, audiences, and students to make change through the live arts.
Today, Live Arts Miami is a regional model of principled innovation and excellence in public arts programming. We invite audiences to explore regionally and globally relevant issues through powerful shows and community programs that generate new ideas and promote experimentation, while encouraging the restoration and regeneration of our unique live arts ecology in South Florida.
A People’s Stage, Committed to Cultural Democracy, Equity and Open Access.
Our programs strive to empower historically underserved cultural producers and audiences, including the MDC student body, the largest, most diverse and one of the most economically underprivileged in the nation, with almost 40 percent of its student population living under the poverty line.
Our placement within MDC—informally known as Democracy’s College—has allowed us to establish new connections between artists, audiences, and students and promote the emergence of new creative networks within the live arts in South Florida.
