A Postcard to the World from the children of Miami-Dade County

Ever wonder what Miami will be like in the year 2050? What if we asked our children? CIRCA/MIA, a one-of-a-kind multi-media performance and film created by celebrated Miami-based dancer and choreographer Sandra Portal-Andreu, explores the future of our fragile South Florida communities and ecologies through drawings, video interviews, and dialogue with more than 37 children across Miami-Dade County—and performed by six mothers of these participants. Interviews and drawings depict what Miami will look like in 2050. From grimm predictions to offerings of hope, the next generation has much to say and it is time that we listen.

The animated film created by Brenna Verner is based on artworks created by children and teens and will be accompanied with their interviews and the eclectic sounds of Miami’s own, Afrobeta, who will also perform live. Using the figure of the child as a literal and figurative symbol of transition, imagination, and possibility, the performance will explore how the hopes and dreams of a child may inform our notions of the past, present, and future of our coastal city on the brink of climate crisis.
