Michael Richards & Me

This map shows my relationship to Micheal Richards and the video installation piece Consume that sparked my timeline quest between 1993-2001. I first discovered an obvious connection with an exhibition piece titled Map Head that created a link between Currents and the maps I was discovering of Florida’s past and present. Micheal Richards’ work and actual physical location has moved like a spirit guide for me.

Michael Richards’ work explores and critiques historical and contemporary representations of race produced for mass consumption. In the mixed media video installation, Consume (1993), four plaster casts of the artist’s face are overlaid with colonial maps of Africa, while a fifth cast head gazes into a monitor playing back a video loop of the artist endlessly gorging himself on chocolate cookies in the shape of the African continent.
