A MULTIMEDIA CONCERT FOR CLIMATE JUSTICE

WDNA Radio and Live Arts Miami present a special Jazz Encounters concert with support from South Arts.

Cuban-born and Miami-bred jazz pianist Fabian Almazan returns home for the world premiere of We Call This Home, a multimedia concert for climate justice featuring breathtaking new music alongside rich visuals by artists Andrew Scott and Sigmund Washington. Almazan is said to be “one of the great young talents of his generation” by jazz great Terrence Blanchard. Experience his poignant new work merging powerful music with the stories of those fighting for environmental equity in South Florida.

Almazan is joined by New York players, Linda May Han Oh on bass and Kenny Grohowski on drums.

The concert also features a performance by students of the Jazz Education Community Coalition, led by vocalist, violinist, educator Nicole Yarling.

Meet the Artist

Jazz pianistFabian Almazan and composer born in Havana, Cuba, and raised in Miami, Florida.  In addition to being a solo artist, Almazan is the founder and director of Biophilia Records and has held the piano chair in Jazz Trumpeter Terence Blanchard‘s band since 2007. Fabian Almazan began studying classical piano at an early age in his homeland, Havana. Having fled Cuba in political exile to Miami, Florida, his parents could not afford private piano lessons. Pianist Conchita Betancourt graciously taught Almazan free of charge for over three years, allowing him to audition for the New World School of the Arts in Miami, Florida where he studied from 1998 to 2002. In 2003, Almazan moved to New York City, where he studied with Kenny Barron at the Manhattan School of Music. While pursuing his bachelor’s degree, Almazan studied instrumentation and orchestration with Giampaolo Bracali. Awards include two Grammy nominations, the SWR New Jazz Meeting commission, the Copland Fund, the Jerome Fund for Emerging Composers Award, the Jazz Gallery Residency, Rockerfeller Brothers Residency, Cintas Foundation Award in Composition, the Sundance Composers’ Lab and the South Arts Jazz Road Creative Residency Award. As an environmentalist and naturalist, Almazan travelled back to his birthplace where he made field recordings of endemic Cuban birds which were then Incorporated into This Land Abounds With Life, Almazan’s most recent and 5th album as a leader. He is the founder and director of Biophilia Records and has worked diligently towards ensuring a continued dialogue of awareness concerning music and environmental justice.
