LIVE ARTS @ SUPERBLUE

A Dynamic Performance Series at Miami’s Premier Experiential Art Center

This August, Live Arts Miami pops up at experiential art center Superblue Miami for two weekends of not-to-be-missed performances by emerging choreographer Mike Tyus and a live musical performance by Gambian kora master Sona Jobarteh set against the backdrop of Superblue Miami’s stunning immersive art installations.

SONA JOBARTEH

Don’t miss this once-in-a-lifetime chance to see an intimate performance by internationally acclaimed musician Sona Jobarteh inside Superblue’s otherworldly Pulse Topology light exhibit.  Hailing from a long line of West African Griots, Jobarteh is a virtuoso on the kora, a traditional West African string instrument. With her soul-stirring voice and unparalleled mastery of the kora, Jobarteh’s music transcends cultural barriers, transporting listeners to distant realms of melody and rhythm. The limited-seat performance will take place within the immersive, glimmering Pulse Topology installation designed by renowned Mexican-Canadian artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, which consists of 3,000 suspended light bulbs that respond to visitors’ heartbeats.

Sona Jobarteh Concert Date:

Saturday, August 19 at 8:00 PM

Sona Jobarteh

The spirit of Sona Jobarteh’s musical work stands on the mighty shoulders of The West African Griot Tradition; she is a living archive of the Gambian people. Sona Jobarteh is the first professional female Kora virtuoso to come from any of the West African Griot dynasties. Her lineage carries a formidable reputation for renowned Kora masters, most notable amongst these are her grandfather Amadu Bansang Jobarteh and her cousin, the legendary Toumani Diabaté.

Sona Jobarteh has performed to crowds from the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles to Symphony Space in New York, and she’s sold out the Barbican in London, Cologne’s Philharmonie, and the Seine Musicale in Paris. Sona Jobarteh scored the film Motherland in 2010 & in 2022 the Hollywood blockbuster Beast, starring Idris Elba.  She co-wrote a track on LL Cool J’s latest with Q Tip, and filmed several of her live shows for CBS’ 60 minutes. The extent of her recognition today is evidenced by more than 23 million+ viewers on YouTube.

Sona’s dedication to spreading powerful humanitarian messages through her songs and her stage performances makes her much more than a musician; she is active in social change and leads by her own example. Sona single handedly set up The Gambia Academy, a pioneering institution dedicated to achieving educational reform across the continent of Africa.

Mike TyusMike Tyus is an award-winning dancer, choreographer, and creative director from Los Angeles, CA. He has been performing and creating dance works for the stage and screen for over 15 years. As a performer Tyus has performed in Cirque Du Soleil in “IRIS” and “KOOZA”, at the Oscars, and with singer/songwriter Sia. Tyus’ choreographic work derives from techniques and styles from his past. Circus theater, acrobatics, ballet, and Greco-Roman wrestling are abstracted and synthesized to create something unique. In 2020, Tyus directed and choreographed a dance film called ELSEWHERE that was showcased on PBS. He also choreographed a culturally significant Facebook commercial directed by FKA Twigs that now lives in the MOMA’s archives.  That same year, Tyus created Mike Tyus & Co, a dance company that focuses on the creation of Tyus’ work with over 13 films and the creation of a piece called “Hunger” developed at Orsolina28, a dance residency in Moncalvo, Italy. As a creative director Tyus has developed branded campaigns for Anthropologie, Veuve Clicquot, Apple, and more, focusing on the relationship between dance and commerce.  Community and Creation are at the core of Tyus’ mission and continue to drive his efforts in crafting work that feeds the human spirit and reflect the times in which we live.
