Haint Blu by Urban Bush Women

A SITE-SPECIFIC PREMIERE PERFORMANCE AT MIAMI’S STORIED HAMPTON HOUSE

Known as the color that Southern families paint their front porches to ward off bad spirits, Haint Blu takes audiences on an immersive dance-theater journey throughout the Hampton House exploring the movements, histories, and stories of community elders and ancestors. Seeped in memory and magic, Haint Blu uses performance as a center and source of healing, while taking us through movement into stillness and rest. A multi-year project created by legendary movement collective Urban Bush Women, this new work premiering at the Historic Hampton House reflects on what has been lost across generations and what can be recovered.

ABOUT THE COMPANY

Urban Bush Women (UBW), founded in 1984 by choreographer Jawole Willa Jo Zollar, is a Brooklyn-based performance ensemble and dance company under the artistic direction of Chanon Judson and Mame Diarra (Samantha) Speis. UBW seeks to bring the untold and under-told histories and stories to light through dance from a woman-centered perspective and as members of the African Diaspora community in order to create a more equitable balance of power in the dance world and beyond. UBW has been named one of America’s Cultural Treasures by the Ford Foundation and one of 286 organizations “empowering voices the world needs to hear.”

Live Arts Miami would like to acknowledge that the land on which we sit is the homeland of the Tequesta, the Seminole Tribe of Florida, and the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida. We honor and respect the indigenous communities of the past, present, and future connected to this territory, as well as those who came here against their will and in search of refuge
