Introducing GULF, a powerful new work by Brigid Baker that blends dance, video, installation, and music by Gavin Bryars, Sofia Gubaidulina, and Jessie Montgomery. Known for her emotionally resonant, multidisciplinary style, Baker draws on light, sound, movement, and human connection to explore the space between us—what separates, and what binds.
Brigid Baker is an abstract visionary grounded in a deeply practical, embodied practice. A lifelong multidisciplinary artist, her choreography draws from a vast lineage of ballet, modern, Baroque, experimental music, and visual art—all filtered through a devotion to nature, consciousness, and the feminine creative spirit. Influenced by the light-field aesthetics of artists like James Turrell and Robert Irwin, she creates performance environments that vibrate with presence and awe, where film and dance coexist within a charged, immersive field.
Central to that immersive field is the ongoing creative collaboration with Justin Trieger, whose sound design and video projection work flow throughout the piece—layered, atmospheric, and integral. Trieger’s sonic and visual landscapes provide the architecture that holds the work’s shifting emotional terrain. The evocative lighting design of Quanikqua Bradshaw Bryant shapes the space in ways both subtle and sublime, while the interpretive brilliance of the dancers—the core interpreters of Baker’s vision—embody and transmit the emotional and energetic frequencies that define the experience. It is the cohesion of all of these elements that makes the field occur.
GULF unfolds across a shifting landscape of movement and projection, where light and sound stretch space and emotion. Baker’s cinematic collages—built from found footage, vintage clips, and handmade installations—anchor the piece in raw human history and everyday wonder.
With an intimate black box environment taking place directly on stage, proximity between performers and audience, and a deeply personal visual language, GULF invites us to reflect on beauty, loss, and belonging in a complex world.
ABOUT BRIGID BAKER
Brigid Baker is a choreographer, educator, director of 6th Street Dance Studio and brigid baker wholeproject, her dance company. Baker’s work derives from her companion practice, Lightbody, an innovation in breath, spinal wave, sound, and movement. Lightbody reveals unconscious movement potentials through patterned neural tracings, from which movement language emerges, with dedication to the subtle energy field of expression. Baker builds multi-disciplinary productions and environments; the well-spring from which all elements emerge is founded in dance. Exaggeration in proportion and scale in environmental elements is used to create spatial “acoustics” which amplify meaning.
