On Sunday, October 4, conductor, singer, educator, and Miami Sound Space founder Laurah Merisier leads a participatory workshop Who Gets to Sing? An Experiment in Collective Singing.

What happens when a room of people with different musical backgrounds works together to choose, learn, interpret, and perform a song? Through collective singing, listening, and decision-making, we’ll explore musicianship as something people practice together rather than something they must prove before they are allowed to participate.

Merisier’s Miami Sound Space is a community choir collective creating opportunities for people across Miami to sing together. Her work explores how community singing can hold artistic rigor, participation, cultural understanding, and shared musical agency while questioning the traditional barriers around who gets to make music.

LALA Open Studio is part of Live Arts Labs Alliance (LALA), Live Arts Miami’s artist development and creative community program. Through monthly artist-led workshops, LALA invites artists, makers, and creatively curious people to exercise their creative muscles, encounter new practices, exchange ideas, and connect with one another.
